Equinor Signs Natural Gas Supply Agreement With Eneco

AI Summary

Norwegian energy giant Equinor has entered into a five-year natural gas supply agreement with Dutch energy company Eneco, expanding its long-term commercial arrangements in the European gas market. Under the contract, Equinor will deliver approximately 9 terawatt-hours (TWh) of natural gas annually, equivalent to around 0.9 billion cubic meters (bcm), from the Norwegian continental shelf to the Dutch gas grid. Deliveries under the agreement commenced on 1st October 2026.

The latest deal follows two earlier agreements involving the Netherlands and Eneco’s operations. In February 2026, Equinor signed a five-year contract to supply up to 0.5 bcm of natural gas annually to the Netherlands. In May 2026, the company also reached an agreement covering approximately 2.2 TWh of annual gas deliveries to Eneco’s German subsidiary, LichtBlick.

Digital Tracking Adds Environmental Transparency

The natural gas supply agreement between Equinor and Eneco also incorporates the transfer of verified environmental attributes through the digital platform operated by Attributes SA. This arrangement enables Eneco to monitor the origin of its contracted Norwegian gas and track the associated upstream greenhouse gas emissions. According to Equinor, the natural gas supplied under the latest contract has a lifecycle greenhouse gas footprint 11.8% lower than the average gas delivered through the Dutch grid, based on 2025 emissions data. The reported difference is attributable to lower emissions during extraction and transportation, rather than combustion, which generates the same emissions regardless of the gas’s origin.

Eneco Expands Norwegian Gas Sourcing for Dutch Market

Eneco said the agreement will enable the company to source Norwegian gas for all its residential and small business customers in the Netherlands. The arrangement supports its efforts to maintain reliable energy supplies while reducing the emissions associated with gas procurement.

The agreement also highlights Norway’s continuing role in European energy security, as utilities pursue long-term supply arrangements that combine dependable deliveries with greater transparency regarding greenhouse gas emissions. For Equinor, the contract further broadens its portfolio of long-term European gas sales agreements and reinforces the commercial significance of Norwegian pipeline gas. The deal comes as Europe continues to balance energy security requirements with its decarbonization objectives, with utilities seeking supply arrangements that address reliability and emissions transparency.
