QAFCO Ammonia Storage Tanks

CB&I was awarded a lump sum turnkey contract by Snamprogetti to design and build two refrigerated ammonia storage tanks for the Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO) 5 ammonia and urea expansion project in Mesaieed, Qatar. These are the currently the largest ammonia tanks in the world. QAFCO is expanding its existing fertilizer plant to increase its production of ammonia and urea.

CB&I work scope includes the engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction (EPFC) of two 50,000 tonnes net capacity single wall refrigerated ammonia storage tanks (concrete containment walls).

CB&I also was responsible for the associated foundations, piping, instrumentation and electrical work to grade. The foundations are on piles approximately 75 feet deep and have about 250 piles per tank. The tanks are approximately 50 meters in diameter and 40.5 meters high.
