Egypt Takes Energy Security Measures Amid Middle East Clash

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly led a high-level meeting on 1st March, 2026 to examine the preparedness of the country’s energy sector as military tensions intensify across the region. The discussions, focused on reinforcing energy security measures, brought together Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi. The objective was to review the sector’s resilience amid dynamic regional developments and to assess whether existing safeguards are enough to ensure undisrupted domestic supplies.

According to Madbouly, the session was held to evaluate readiness levels and review the effectiveness of precautionary steps already introduced to protect domestic energy flows. He also highlighted the necessity of maintaining safe strategic reserves of petroleum products for multiple uses, alongside securing enough funding and budget allocations to complete ongoing projects. He described energy security as a core pillar of national security, and essential in safeguarding economic and social stability.

Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi briefed on measures to guarantee supply stability and readiness in the event of escalation. These energy security measures include developing alternative capacities and diversifying gas supply sources while sustaining domestic production. Among the steps outlined were signing long-term supply agreements with international companies, contracting liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from multiple suppliers, and strengthening infrastructure to handle LNG imports.

Badawi further noted that the government is encouraging continued exploration and production activity by ensuring the regular settlement of dues owed to foreign partners, thereby supporting higher domestic output. He affirmed full readiness to provide the necessary gas supplies to the electricity sector, for both residential and industrial consumption. At the same time, efforts are under way to expand available volumes of petroleum products and maintain safe strategic reserves of gasoline, diesel, butane, and other essential fuels.

The meeting took place against a backdrop of mounting geopolitical tensions that have heightened Cairo’s concerns over energy supply, prompting it to intensify energy security measures to preserve Egypt’s energy stability.
