Venture Global confirmed that it had asked for permission from the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to more than double the capacity of its Plaquemines liquefied natural gas export facility, which happens to be under development in Louisiana.
Apparently, with Plaquemines facility expansion, the company intends to add 30 million metric tons per annum- mtpa of additional LNG capacity to the last approved 28 mtpa. Plaquemines already happens to be the second-largest LNG facility in the U.S. and in the month of October 2025 was responsible for 22% of the overall exports from the country, as per the data coming from LSEG, the financial firm.
As per Mike Sabel, the CEO of Venture Global, their decision to majorly increase the permitted capacity for the project goes on to reflect the robust market demand that they continue to witness, and this expansion is indeed going to play a major role in going ahead and meeting that demand.
It is well to be noted that the proposed expansion is going to allow the company to produce more than 100 million mtpa of liquid fuel and thereby challenge giants like QatarEnergy as well as Cheniere as the top exporter of LNG in the world.
Venture Global, which was just a startup three years ago, quickly went on to become the second-largest LNG exporter in the U.S. with a business model that lets it export the cargos while the construction as well as commissioning phases are still on.
The strategy has enabled the company to profit from certain higher spot market prices before it starts supplying the longer-term customers; however, the practice has also gone on to result in arbitration cases as well as lawsuits from customers, which include many of the largest energy companies in the world.
Notably, the Plaquemines facility expansion is going to be built incrementally across three phases and will have 32 modular liquefaction trains, the company added.
It is worth noting that Venture Global has also gone ahead and filed an application with the U.S. Department of Energy – US DoE for the export authorizations that are associated with the additional planned capacity, said the company.
