Idemitsu Kosan announced on 17th March 2026 that it will invest USD 500 million in MidOcean Energy, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) company established and managed by EIG, a leading institutional investor in the global energy and infrastructure sectors, to invest globally in LNG projects. The move represents what the company described as the start of their full-scale entry into the LNG business, underscoring its broader LNG industry entry strategy. By forming a strategic partnership with MidOcean Energy, Idemitsu aims to secure business opportunities across the LNG sector while continuing efforts to strengthen the stable supply of energy. The agreement tied to the Investment is expected to be finalized by the end of March 2026, marking a significant milestone in its LNG industry entry.
MidOcean Energy brings an established track record of participation in LNG projects spanning Australia, Canada and South America, and is focused on building a diversified portfolio that balances cost competitiveness with carbon emissions reduction. Its management team, equipped with extensive industry experience, is advancing a growth strategy designed to bridge the energy transition. For Idemitsu, this LNG industry entry aligns with its existing operations, including natural gas development in Vietnam and supplying natural gas to power plants linked to data centers in North America. The company believes the investment serves as a catalyst to capture the opportunity of participation in the global LNG market through a strategic partnership with MidOcean Energy, a company with strong expertise and experience in deploying capital into the LNG sector. The investment remains subject to obtaining all necessary approvals and permits under applicable competition laws.
The company also highlighted the broader role of LNG in the global energy mix, noting that compared with oil and coal, LNG emits less CO₂ during combustion. This characteristic is strengthening its position as a practical energy source that can support both reduced environmental impact and stable supply during the transition toward a low-carbon and decarbonized society. With supply regions spread across multiple geographies, LNG provides strategic advantages in mitigating geopolitical risks and enhancing energy security, while enabling diversification of procurement sources, factors reinforcing Idemitsu’s LNG industry entry rationale.
In Asia, rising population levels and ongoing economic expansion are driving increased demand for LNG, particularly for power generation and industrial use. Against this backdrop, Idemitsu views LNG as a key medium to long-term growth segment. The company emphasized its intention to pursue sustained growth through collaboration with partners, improve corporate value, and contribute to building a sustainable energy society as it advances its LNG industry entry.
